The molecular face of lipid rafts in model membranes.

Cell membranes contain a large number of different lipid species. Such a multicomponent mixture exhibits a complex phase behavior with regions of structural and compositional heterogeneity. Especially domains formed in ternary mixtures, composed of saturated and unsaturated lipids together with cholesterol, have received a lot of attention as they may resemble raft formation in real cells. Here...

Dynamic Fingering in Adhered Lipid Membranes.

Artificial lipid membranes incorporating proteins have frequently been used as models for the dynamic organization of biological structures in living cells as well as in the development of biology-inspired technologies. We report here on the experimental demonstration and characterization of a pattern-forming process that occurs in a lipid bilayer membrane adhered via biotin-avidin binding to a...

Models of dynamic extraction of lipid tethers from cell membranes.

When a ligand that is bound to an integral membrane receptor is pulled, the membrane and the underlying cytoskeleton can deform before either the membrane delaminates from the cytoskeleton or the ligand detaches from the receptor. If the membrane delaminates from the cytoskeleton, it may be further extruded and form a membrane tether. We develop a phenomenological model for this process by assu...

Dynamic Response of Model Lipid Membranes to Ultrasonic Radiation Force

Low-intensity ultrasound can modulate action potential firing in neurons in vitro and in vivo. It has been suggested that this effect is mediated by mechanical interactions of ultrasound with neural cell membranes. We investigated whether these proposed interactions could be reproduced for further study in a synthetic lipid bilayer system. We measured the response of protein-free model membrane...
